Bevendean Estate

	Estate before 1945 The land had been farmed from early times and this continued until the 1940’s, when the land was needed for new housing.
	Bevendean Estate during WW2 The Bevendean estate and surrounding area from 1939 to the end of WW2 and a few years after.
	Prefabs It was decided in July 1945 to site 66 Temporary Houses on the Lower Bevendean Estate.
	Council Houses With a need for new homes in the post-war period, the Bevendean estate was quickly developed in the 1940s/50s.
	Self Build Houses & Bungalows Self Build Houses in Plymouth Avenue and Bungalows in Heath Hill Avenue.
	Schools Bevendean School opened on 4th September 1950, there were four classes with 167 pupils. Before Bevendean School opened some children went to other local schools.
	Scout and Cub Hut in Bevendean Originally the Cubs and Scouts met in the Barn Church or Bevendean School. Later they leased a site behind 115 Heath Hill Avenue.
	BeCCa In 1976 BeCCa were struggling to operate in the church hall. What happened next? Becca closed on the 25th May 2017.
	Shops In 1950 a plan for seven shops at the junction of Heath Hill Aveue & Leybourne Road with Taunton Road was put forward.
	White Admiral Open from 1956 to 2000 Bevendean Hotel Opened in 1936 or 1937
	Factories In 1951 a plan for 9 factories to relieve the congested central areas of the town was put forward.
	Water Supply Originally wells were dug for water, by 1912 water was piped to the farm. A reservoir was built in the 1960's.
	Doctors Surgery The first doctors surgery was at No. 1 Leybourne Road. The surgery moved to Heath Hill Avenue in 1959 and closed in September 2016.
	Bevendean Isolation Hospital Temporary buildings were put up on a site in Bevendean Road in 1881. These were replaced in 1898 by permanent buildings.
	Care Homes in Bevendean Hazelgrove formerly Heather Lodge, building started in 1962 and it opened in November 1963. Partridge House opened on Wednesday 27 May 1953 and was rebuilt in the late 1990s.
	Geophysical Survey of Farm Green Brighton & Hove Archaeological Society conducted a geophysical survey of Farm Green in Bevendean in October 2019.
	The Avenue The first part was completed by 1925 and the second section was completed by 1932.
