White Admiral Public House - photos from Mr Byrne
Photographs from Mr Byrne, the first landlord of the White Admiral public house in Lower Bevendean.
The photographs below show the outside and interior of the pub while he was the landlord.
He comments that the pub was built in March 1956, although plans for the pub are dated July 1954. One photograph shows the pub before it is completed. There are some photographs of the completed pub including views of the bars inside the building.
There were 2 bars a public and a saloon bar with an off-licence in the middle.
The Brewers to start with were Kemptown Brewery, later the pub changed to Charrington’s. There are a couple of photos of the garden where flowers were grown to decorate the interior of the pub. There are a couple of photographs of the pub sign one with a painting of an admiral and one painting of a butterfly.
There are some photographs taken from one of the pub windows overlooking the car park towards the school playing field including one showing floodwater in the dip outside the pub.
Mr Byrne comments “They have replaced the White Admiral with a horrible block of flats”.
